Mom allegedly left 8-year-old home alone for Memorial Day weekend

SUFFOLK, Va. -- A mother was arrested after she allegedly left her 8-year-old boy home alone during Memorial Day weekend.

Kionna Moret, 27, is facing child endangerment and child neglect charges. Police in Suffolk, Virginia, say Moret wasn't planning to come home until Monday and allegedly threatened to spank the boy if he told anyone. The child was rescued after a neighbor discovered he was alone and called police.

"To leave an 8-year-old on their own for a weekend and go two states away, to me, is just mind blowing," the woman who filed the police report told WAVY-TV.

The woman said the boy told her that he had pre-made corned beef hash and pizza to last him the weekend. Plus, a cell phone to check in with his mother.

Moret bonded out of jail. The 8-year-old remains in the custody of Child Protective Services.
