Two men were shot, one fatally, on Chicago's South Side Thursday morning.

Police responded to a report of two people wounded in a shooting in the 5500-block of South Perry Avenue in the city's Englewood neighborhood just after 4:55 a.m.

Officers found a 48-year-old man lying in the street. He had been shot in the mouth. He died at the scene. Authorities have not released his identity.

They also found a 35-year-old man who had been shot in the shoulder. He was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

Police said a preliminary investigation shows the men may have been the victims of a robbery. They have not disclosed the relationship between the two men.

Ernest Jones, who lived in the apartment below the man who was killed, said he heard the gunfire.

"I don't know how many. Just heard the pop, pop, pop," Jones said.

He told ABC7 Eyewitness News that he moved in three months ago, but never got to know the victim. Jones also said he has never been robbed in that area.

"(There's a lot of) stuff going through my head. Why are folks breaking into people's homes and all that?" Jones asked.

Other neighbors who also heard the gunshots were nervous too show their faces on camera. One woman said she was concerned because person who shot the two men is on the run.

"We get up early every morning for work. That could've been someone we know coming out for work or something," she said.

Area Central detectives are investigating the shooting. No one is in custody.
