CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police said a one person was dead of a gunshot wound and three people, including a child, were injured in a multi-car crash in Englewood Thursday afternoon.

Fire officials were called to the scene at West 71st Street and South Morgan Street for a multi-vehicle accident around 4 p.m.

Police said a 31-year-old man was driving a Jeep northbound on Morgan heading toward 71st when he collided head-on with an Altima driven by a 63-year-old woman and carrying her 5-year-old grandson in the back seat, which was traveling southbound. The cars then struck a parked car.

"I just heard the car crash, the impact of the car crash, and I went outside to see what's going on and it looked bad, pretty bad, like I didn't know what was going on. There was supposed to be a shooting going on, but I didn't hear any gunfire," said Mark Johnson, who heard the crash.

The woman was taken to Christ Hospital and the boy to Comer Children's Hospital in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries.

"There was a child in the back seat and an older woman in the front seat, she was like crushed in there. They had to use the jaws of life to get her out," Johnson said.

Police said a 21-year-old woman was in the shooting victim's car during the crash and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition with minor injuries.

The driver of the Jeep was shot in the chest and was dead when firefighters arrived. Police said he was letting a passenger out of his car when an unknown offender approached him and fired shots. The crash occurred while he fled.

Chicago police are investigating the shooting and the crash.
