CHICAGO (WLS) -- A driver was shot on the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway near 75th Street overnight. Illinois State Police said someone fired shots on the expressway around midnight.

An adult male driver was grazed by a bullet. He was the only one in his vehicle. The driver was able to pull off the expressway at 111th Street. He was taken to Roseland hospital, where officers interviewed him.

Investigators said it is unclear whether the driver was struck by a stray bullet of if he was targeted. There is no word yet on whether the shooting was a case of road rage or if it stemmed from an earlier incident. Police said there were no witnesses.

State police shut down the outbound Dan Ryan between 75th and 79th streets for nearly an hour overnight to look for shell casings. They could shut down a portion of the expressway again at some point Thursday to continue their investigation.
