CPD releases reports on Cedrick Chatman shooting
CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago Police Department released Friday documents and reports in the deadly police shooting of 17-year-old Cedrick Chatman - one day after the city released surveillance video of the shooting.
Police said the Jan. 7, 2013 shooting occurred after the officers discovered a robbery suspect driving a stolen silver Dodge Charger. The heavily redacted documents show that the two officers involved gave similar accounts of the event.
However, attorneys for Chatman's family claim he was running away and offered no threat that would justify the officers' firing four shots at him.
Despite their claims, the original case incident report released Friday afternoon labels the case closed, calling it a justifiable homicide.
The report, dated less than a week after the shooting, offers several accounts of the shooting, including:
"Officer Fry began to parallel the fleeing subject, at which time the subject turned his body to the right, at which time PO Fry observed a dark object in the offender's hand. Officer Fry believing this object to be a handgun fired 4 times at the offender, fearing for the life of Officer Toth who was just behind the offender."
It was later revealed that the black object was an iPhone case.
There are numerous reports and supplemental reports on the incident offering details of the alleged robbery and carjacking that preceded the shooting, as well as details about the weapon Officer Kevin Fry used a SIG Sauer P220 that investigators determined had been fired four times.
Officer Frey relayed a similar story to investigators.
The report states: "Officer Fry said the offender had a dark gray/black object in his hand. Officer Fry said he believed that the object was a handgun and he was in fear of his partner's life ... Officer Fry stated he fired his weapon at the offender four times. Officer Fry related that the offender ran several more steps, then collapsed at the curb on Jeffrey."
The Independent Police Review Authority and the Cook County State's Attorney's office have determined that the shooting was justified.
