Hundreds brave subzero wind chills to eat at Hot Doug's pop-up shop
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Hundreds of people waited outside in the bone-chilling cold for the chance to eat at Hot Doug's pop up shop in Fulton Market on Monday. It was a must-do for Sundeep Jatwani, who is visiting from Dubai.
"I've seen Hot Doug's on TV, so I just had to be here to check it out," Sundeep Jatwani said.
"I have two t-shirts, a jacket and then the Columbia. And I'm still pretty cold," Cesar Mendoza said.
"It's amazing. I woke up this morning, it's -6 degrees, and I'm thinking there might be three people maybe. And I never took that for granted and this has just been fabulous," said Doug Sohn, Hot Doug's.
Cold weather in Chicago during the winter is to be expected, but not everyone accepts it - especially when the wind chills are 20 to 25 degrees below zero.
"It's freezing. I don't like the cold. I prefer summer," Lisa Turner said.
For others heading out in the cold, they were not discouraged by the deep freeze.
"You got to put on multiple pairs of socks," said John Logalbo. "If you've got long johns, long underwear put that on. I have a sweatshirt on underneath here and another coat, which is what I am wearing right now."
"I wish I was in, right about now, Florida," said Lorenzo Pearson. "Really, it's kind of ridiculous."
The new ice rink at Wicker Park is finally ready for skaters and on this Martin Luther King holiday, there were plenty of takers.
"It was too cold to go skiing, so we figured we'll go out to the local rink and here we are," Tom Arey said.

Monday marked the coldest morning of the season so far with sub-zero temperatures and wind chills across the Chicago area. A Wind Chill Advisory expired at noon.
ABC7 Meteorologist Tracy Butler said the average high for this time of year is 31 degrees. Monday's high temperature is expected to be between 5 and 10 degrees.
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for Berrien and Cass counties in Michigan until 7 p.m. Monday due to lake-effect snow and high winds. The weather service said roads may become hazardous.
Temperatures are expected to rise as the week progresses with highs reaching the teens on Tuesday and the 20s on Wednesday. The Chicago area could see snow Wednesday morning.
There have been six cold-related deaths this season. The latest was early Saturday, when 87-year-old woman Bernice Green was found dead near her home in the 8100 block of South Morgan on the city's South Side. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office ruled her death was caused by cold exposure.
Chicago's Department of Family and Support Services said warming centers are open to anyone who needs them. Call 311 for more information.
