CPD changes strategy in response to uptick in shootings

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago Police Department is making some changes with the hope of stopping a rise in murders and shootings to start the year.

CPD is putting more officers in vehicles on city streets. Three hundred eighty officers and 70 sergeants are moving from foot patrols into those vehicles. One hundred new sergeants will be assigned to new police districts and patrol assignments.

The hope is to increase visibility in some of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods.

Interim Supt. John Escalante will be in Washington, D.C., Thursday to discuss ways departments around the country are fighting crime.
