CAMDEN, N.J. -- A 17-year-old girl has been charged in the murder of a 13-year-old boy in Camden, New Jersey.

The girl was charged on Wednesday in the death of Nathaniel Plummer Jr.

Plummer was shot near Beacon and Line streets late in the evening on Jan. 7 and he became the city's first homicide victim of the year when he died hours later.

One neighbor, who didn't want to show her face on camera, says she called police the night of the shooting.

"I heard the shots, I called 911, and I seen he was laying on the floor. We went out and tried to help, but we couldn't, then the cops came and took him," that neighbor said.

People who live in the community say they are shocked by the violence and the victim and suspect were only teenagers.

"We have never had any problems of this nature in this neighborhood. This is something that we didn't expect, but since it did happen we are very concerned about it," said Brother Zawdie Abdul-Malik of Camden.

The girl has been held at a juvenile detention facility since Jan. 9 to face attempted murder and other charges stemming from an Oct. 30, 2015 shooting that left a 19-year-old wounded.

Authorities say ballistic evidence from the bullets linked the suspect to both shootings.

Her name has not been released because she is a minor. It's not known what led up to the shooting.
