SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (WLS) -- Thirty-three seniors are suspended from Thornwood High School after a firecracker went off during an assembly at the south suburban school.

On Wednesday, the school sent a letter to parents outlining more punishments.

Assemblies and senior field trips are canceled until further notice, and seniors must meet strict criteria to be allowed to attend prom.

Some parents told ABC7 they think the district is overreacting.

"It was a prank, it only takes one child to light a firework. They're reprimanding over 30 students for one incident," said Simeon Evans-Reid, the mother of a suspended student.

Parents said another meeting with the district is scheduled for tomorrow night.
