Officer linked to Koschman case resigns

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago police lieutenant who helped investigate a homicide involving the nephew of former mayor Richard Daley has resigned.

The department says Lieutenant Denis Walsh resigned last week, days after Interim Superintendent John Escalante recommended that he be fired.

The department has said Walsh and two other officers did not properly follow department policies when they investigated the death of David Koschman.

Koschman died in 2014 after a fight with Daley's nephew Richard Vanecko.

The department is also seeking a one-year, unpaid suspension for Sgt. Sam Cirone. Det. Nicholas Spanos has already received a one-year, unpaid suspension. Both were also involved in closing the case without interviewing witnesses who were with Venecko the night he punched Koschman.
