Study: Heartburn drugs increase risk of dementia

Seniors taking popular, over-the-counter heartburn drugs may be at a higher risk of dementia, according to a new study.

The medicines include Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid.

All are used to cut down the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

German researchers found that people 75 and older who take them regularly had a 44 percent hike in the risk of dementia.

That study did not find a cause and effect link.
