WASHINGTON, TN (WLS) -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission is calling hoverboards an "imminent hazard."

The safety agency sent a letter to retailers and manufacturers that said self-balancing scooters with lithium ion batteries that are not UL certified are defective.

Right now, there are no hoverboards that meet UL standards. The agency warns that defective hoverboards are subject to being seized when imported or recalled if sold in the U.S.

Since December 1, there have been 52 reports of hoverboards bursting into flames.
