CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 26-year-old driver was shot in the back in Chicago's Morgan Park neighborhood. Police said he tried to drive away, but crashed through a fence. His car ended up hanging over a busy stretch of I-57.

The man was sitting in a car near West 115th Street and South Ashland Avenue around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday when someone opened fire, police said. As he tried to drive off, he crashed into a fence and stopped just inches from going over an embankment and down onto the interstate.

"I thought I heard two shots. I couldn't tell what was going on. So I came down here and saw this," said Anthony Amaechi, who was in the area when the shooting occurred.

Crews were able to pull the car back, away from the ledge. The driver was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

Area South investigators have not released a motive for the shooting. No one is in custody.
