WAUKEGAN, Ill. -- A police standoff in north suburban Waukegan ended early Monday morning, a source said, several hours after it began.

Officers fired tear gas into a home to help bring the barricade situation to close.

The standoff began around 4:45 p.m. Sunday when officers responded to a call of a domestic disturbance in the 1700-block of Beriwck Boulevard.

Waukegan Police Department Cmdr. Joe Florip said a man with a gun barricaded himself inside an apartment. Everyone who was inside the residence had made it outside by the time officers arrived.

The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System SWAT Team responded to the scene and took over tactical response, including communicating with the suspect, Florip said. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The suspect was taken into custody early Monday morning.
