MATTESON, Ill. (WLS) -- A 17-year-old boy is in custody after he allegedly led police on a brief high-speed chase in south suburban Matteson in a stolen vehicle, officials said.

Richton Park police located the vehicle around 6:23 a.m. Friday at Churchill and Camden after it was reported stolen on March 7. The officers said the alleged offender was asleep in the car, which was parked and running when they approached it. The driver then awoke, put the vehicle in gear and fled, striking two unoccupied squads before entering I-57, police said.

Matteson police, who happened to be in the area, reported seeing the vehicle driving eastbound on Vollmer Road from Ridgeland Avenue turning into Creekside Subdivision. The vehicle then sideswiped a squad car, left the subdivision and returned to Ridgeland Avenue at approximately 50-80 mph, police said.

The vehicle then attempted to turn left onto Manhattan-Monee Road from Ridgeland and crashed into a corn field, police said. The offender then jumped out and ran but was soon apprehended.

No injuries were reported and officials say charges are pending.
