Katy ISD says a high school coach is on administrative leave after a pitching machine incident sent one student to the hospital.

HOUSTON -- Katy ISD says a high school coach is on administrative leave after a pitching machine incident sent one student to the hospital.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon at Taylor High School.

Katy ISD says two students were struck by baseballs ejected from a defensive training machine that was being operated by a coach. One student was evaluated on campus by a trainer, and another student was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

That child was released from the hospital Thursday. Those close to his family say he suffered fractures, bruising, and swelling. They worry he may have suffered permanent neurological damage.

"Because this is an open investigation, we do not have any further details at this time. However, we assure parents that the safety of all students and staff during any type of athletic practice, competition or related event is top priority, and this incident will be thoroughly investigated. The coach has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of this investigation," a Katy ISD spokesperson said in a prepared statement.

Police on Thursday interviewed several Taylor High School students.
