Would-be robber shot by victim in Uptown

A man shot a thief trying to rob him in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood overnight.

Police said a 28-year-old man with a gun walked up to two men unloading a vehicle in the 1100-block of West Winona Street around 10:30 p.m. Thursday and demanded their phones, wallets and keys.

One of the victims handed over his wallet and phone. Police said the other victim pulled out a gun and fired at the suspect several times. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

Police said the would-be robber was on parole for a past armed robbery conviction.

Neighbors said they fear there will be more crime as temperatures go up.

No charges have been filed. The shooting remains under investigation.
