Pedestrian fatally struck by Metra train in Downers Grove

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (WLS) -- Metra trains on the BNSF line are moving again at Main Street in Downers Grove after a pedestrian was struck and killed by an inbound train Wednesday morning.

Officials said Train No. 1252, an inbound express train that originated in Aurora and was not scheduled to stop at the Downers Grove station, hit the man around 8 a.m.

Witnesses said he may have been standing close to the tracks. The DuPage County coroner confirmed the fatality, but did not release further details.

Police closed the Main Street crossing for the investigation. Drivers should find an alternate route. The crossings at Washington Street, Fairview Avenue, Forest Street and Belmont Road are all open, police said.

Caryl Henningson says the unidentified man was killed by the approaching train as he tried to cross the tracks, as two other people had just done moments before.

"I just turned by head right away, and I saw him fall under the right side of the train," Henningson said.

Some commuters who regularly use the train stop wondered if they knew the man who was killed.

"I do see him here a lot. I just hope that's not the gentleman who became the victim of today," said Jim Mosley.

Wednesday's Metra fatality is the second in as many days. A 19-year old man was killed Tuesday in Hanover Park on a different line.
