A couple in Michigan faced criminal charges over lost library books

ADRIAN, Mich. -- A couple in Michigan faced criminal charges after their son checked out a Doctor Seuss book back in 2014, but lost it. Then, the next year, the couple checked out a second book and lost that, too.

The library later sent them a letter asking the couple to return the books or face charges. They offered to pay the late fees but by then it was already too late.

They were both charged with a misdemeanor for failing to return property, local station WXYZ reports.

Mom Cathy Duren said, "I never thought a Dr. Seuss book would lead to this. It's ridiculous."

They each had to pay a 100-dollar bond to avoid going to jail.
