Walk to end lung cancer

DEERFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- Lung cancer is one of the leading cancer-related deaths in the United States. 1 in 15 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime, and more than 60 percent of those diagnosed have never smoked or are former smokers. In an effort to end the deadly disease, LUNGevity, the nation's largest lung cancer-focused nonprofit, is hosting its 5th Annual Breathe Deep North Short Fun Run/Walk.

The event is one of 40 walks nationwide benefitting LUNGevity Foundation. The run hopes to surpass $1 million in its 5-year total to fight lung cancer. Runners can participate Sunday, April 17 at 9:15am at Deerfield High School. The event will also feature music and mascots Southpaw from the Chicago White Sox and Sparky from the Chicago Fire. Lung cancer survivors will count down to the release of 300 balloons covered with handwritten names and messages of remembrance and hope to start the walk. Cancer Survivors Jill Feldman and Bob Lehrman joined ABC 7 Live from Breathe Deep North Shore.
