CHICAGO (WLS) -- A deputy commissioner in the Chicago Fire Department abruptly resigned Wednesday. John McNicholas crashed a department vehicle overnight near Lake Shore Drive.

The fire department said McNicholas was operating that vehicle outside department policy.

Police say he was trying to avoid another crash, lost control and hit a pole. Police said that alcohol was not a factor.
