MYSORE, India (WLS) -- Zookeepers in southern India are taking care of a baby baboon that was abandoned by its mother after birth.

The baboon infant was born April 4. Zoo officials in Mysore, India, said every time the infant would reach out to its mother for milk, it was rejected.

After two days, they sent the mother to the zoo hospital and gave the young animal a soft toy monkey to cuddle with.

The baby baboon is now in better spirits. Zoo veterinarian K.R. Ramesh said the infant is in good health and eating well.

"We are feeding the baby every two hours and it is holding on to a soft toy monkey. Now the baby is fine and happy," Ramesh said.
