WESTLAND, Mich. -- A man has died after being hit by an Amtrak train in suburban Detroit.

Witnesses told police that the man walked around safety gates that were down Sunday as the train was moving through Westland. Deputy Chief Brian Miller says an Amtrak train moves faster than a freight train.

The victim was identified as 37-year-old Robert Turner.

The train with 104 passengers began its trip in Chicago. Riders finished their travel to Pontiac by bus.
