NEW YORK -- A 4-year-old boy who fell down an elevator shaft in Brooklyn has died.

The boy was alert and conscious when he was taken to Methodist Hospital, but died Thursday morning.

Around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the garage located on Union Street, the boy, who was with his parents, climbed into a parking garage elevator on the third floor. He suddenly fell through a gap between the elevator and the wall.

The boy dropped about 50 feet.

According to eyewitnesses, the rescue was fast because an FDNY firehouse is across the street from the garage.

The Department of Buildings responded to the scene for an investigation. The DOB said there's an ongoing investigation of the elevator and issued a cease-use order Wednesday pending further review.
