Man, 33, charged after setting fire during Pilsen festival

Alejandro Lozano, 33 (Chicago Police Department)

A Chicago man was charged Tuesday after starting a fire this weekend in the middle of the Mole de Mayo festival in Pilsen.

At about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Alejandro Lozano, 33, allegedly broke into a closed retail business in the 1500-block of West 18th Street and intentionally started a fire that caused significant building damage.

The Latino food festival was being held near West 18th Street and Ashland Avenue. The fire shut down the festival early.

Lozano, who was hospitalized and then released on Monday, faces one count of felony arson-aggravated/known person present.

Two police officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and treated at Stroger Hospital.

Lozano is scheduled to appear in Bond Court on Wednesday.
