ATLANTA -- An Olympic athlete whose gold medal was stolen in Atlanta, Georgia, is asking the thief to do the right thing and return it.

Joe Jacobi and his family were having dinner when robbers broke into his car and took his gold medal, WSB reports.

He won it for the white water canoe slalom in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Joe always travels with his medal, so he can share his Olympic experience with others.

"When we won the medal 24 years ago, I knew the medal did not belong in a safety deposit box. It belonged out with me, sharing it with people, letting people hold it, touch it and formulate their own Olympic dream," Jacobi said.

A laptop and other property were also taken, but later found in a bag near a dumpster. An eyewitness got a picture of the car the robbers may be in.
