CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 21-year-old man was fatally shot on Lake Shore Drive overnight, just steps from Grant Park.

The victim, identified by his family as George Morgan Jr. of Chicago, had a 10-month-old son. Morgan's mother, Sharon Dacres, said he was celebrating his first Father's Day when he was shot.

"I don't know much, except he was in a car with his friends, going out to celebrate Father's Day. Apparently another car drove alongside the car he was in. They started shooting in the car and my son got hit in the side," Dacres said.

Investigators said someone in a dark-colored SUV began shooting at Morgan's vehicle in the southbound lanes of N. Lake Shore Drive near Balbo Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Monday. Authorities shut down Lake Shore Drive for a time and marked the bullet casings on the roadway.

The person driving the vehicle Morgan was riding in rushed him to Chicago police headquarters at East 35th Street and South Michigan Avenue to get help.

Police called an ambulance. Morgan was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the shooting was gang-related and Morgan was a known gang member.

No one is in custody. Area Central detectives are investigating.
