The Friedrich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) invites families, cyclists, and everyone else to their 5th Annual rideATAXIA Chicago event on July 24, 2016. The multi-route cycling fundraiser benefits FARA , a non-profit dedicated to research leading to treatments and a cure for Friedreich's ataxia. Symptoms of the disease usually start between the ages of 5 and 18, Over time, Friedreich's ataxia causes a loss of coordination and muscle strength. Most young people with FA require mobility aids such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair by their teens or early 20s. FA can also cause life-threatening heart conditions, diabetes, and severe scoliosis.
