Summer is the ideal time for home remodeling

CHICAGO (WLS) -- If you're planning on remodeling your home, summer is the perfect season to get started. Adding a deck to extend outdoor living space can increase the value of your home.

First, make sure you're choosing the right material for the job; different decking material can suit your needs and budget. Pressure-treated and composite decks are common in Chicago, because they require less maintenance and hold-up to severe winter weather. Pressure treated wood is durable, helps deter termites and rot, and it can also be infused with color. Composite decking, which is made from wood or plastic, is more expensive than the other materials, but it won't crack splinter or fade.

If you're renovating, make sure you replace or repair damaged boards and thoroughly clean the deck with cleaner and a pressure washer. Deck cleaning helps the wood last longer, to protect your investment, and can expose signs of insects, wood decay, fungal growth and premature aging. You can also spruce up your deck with stain.
