Work begins on Lakefront Trail bike, foot path separation

Chicago's Lakefront Trail.

The Chicago Park District broke ground Sunday on the first phase of its plan to create two distinct paths - one for cyclists and other for pedestrians - along the Lakefront Trail.

The goal is to reduce congestion and increase safety.

The first phase, between 31st and 40th streets through the South Shore, is slated to be finished by the end of the year. The goal of the project is to have separate paths on the trail from 31st to 51st streets and from Fullerton to Ohio streets.

The Lakefront Trail is also undergoing repaving, with approximately seven miles from Ardmore Avenue to Oak Street Beach being resurfaced.
