5-year-old struck and killed by lightning on North Carolina beach

CAROVA, N.C. -- A 5-year-old boy died after he was struck by lightning Sunday afternoon on a North Carolina beach in the Outer Banks.

Emergency crews responded to the call just after 4:10 p.m. to Carova, N.C. Authorities said the family put the child in their SUV after he was struck and met EMS partway.

He was then taken to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital by ambulance where he died.

The boy's family was at the beach on vacation.

Currituck Fire and EMS responded to the call.
