Officials performed CPR on the 5-year-old boy, who was unresponsive when pulled from a pool at Devonshire Park in Skokie.

SKOKIE, Ill. (WLS) -- A 5-year-old boy was unresponsive when pulled from a pool Saturday afternoon in northwest suburban Skokie, police said.

At 10 p.m. Saturday, the boy was still hospitalized, but his condition was not available.

At about 3:45 p.m., the 5-year-old boy was pulled from the pool at Devonshire Park, 4422 Greenwood St. He may have been floating on his stomach for several minutes.

CPR was performed at the pool and the boy was breathing when taken to St. Francis Hospital. The boy was then transferred to Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago.

Lifeguards were on duty at the time of the incident, police said, but the number was not immediately known. The Skokie Park District is investigating.

"What surprised me is it wasn't the lifeguards that noticed it," said Abrielle Claude, 14, who was playing in the pool with her 9-year-old brother, Tony Claude.

"As soon as I said, 'Marco,' the guy was like, 'Is that kid ok?' And then the lifeguard was like, 'Try and poke him.' So I was about to until my sister said to back off, so I did," Tony said.

The park district pool was shut down for the remainder of the day.

About 30 people were in the pool at the time, according to witnesses.
