CALUMET CITY, Ill. (WLS) -- A 19-year-old woman from south suburban Calumet City died after she and a 19-year-old man from Chicago were shot several times near a gas station.

Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 200-block of Torrence Avenue around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday.

They found a blue Nissan sedan at the GoLo gas station. The vehicle had at least two bullet holes in the windshield and the passenger side windows blown out.

Both victims were rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where the man's condition stabilized and the woman later died. Her identity has not been released.

People who live nearby, like Patricia Jones, said they were not surprised by the shooting. Jones said she is constantly on the lookout for her own safety in that area and carries a weapon at all times.

"I have to walk down the street with this," Jones said, gesturing to a small knife in her hand, "because people are walking up and down the street and they'll walk up behind you, the whole nine yards. I have to protect me."

The investigation is ongoing. There is no word yet on whether anyone is in custody.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting should call Calumet City police at 708-868-2500.
