CHICAGO (WLS) --Special Olympics Chicago hopes Michael Phelps will make a big splash at next year's Chicago Polar Plunge.
The organization has invited the 28-time Olympic medal winner to the Polar Plunge, which will take place on March 5, 2017 at North Avenue Beach. Notable celebrities who participated in the past include Jimmy Fallon, Vince Vaughn and Lady Gaga.
"Michael Phelps is an icon in the world of swimming and an athlete that everyone has loved watching and following through the years," said Susan Nicholl, executive director, SCC/Special Olympics Chicago. "Now is the perfect time for Michael to make a splash in the city of Chicago, by taking part in the Chicago Polar Plunge. It would be a life-changing experience for our athletes, and an incredible example of the one of the world's greatest athletes giving back to other athletes. After winning five gold medals and one silver medal at the Rio Olympics, jumping into Lake Michigan is easy!"
Phelps announced his retirement from competitive swimming after winning five gold medals and one silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The Chicago Polar Plunge is the largest fundraiser of the year for Special Olympics Chicago. The event has raised millions of dollars for the organization over the past few years.
Registration for the Chicago Polar Plunge opens in December. For more information, visit www.sochicago.org.
