CHICAGO (WLS) -- Former Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley reacted to recent outbreaks of violence in Chicago while at a community event Tuesday.

"Well you have to do something about it. You can't just say 'I don't like it, I feel bad for the children.' What are you doing about it?" Daley said.

The former mayor, who led the city for more than 20 years, joined volunteers and colleagues from his law firm at a neighborhood garden project. The group put together a back-to-school garden at Smith Elementary School on West 13th Street.
