WEST GLACIER, Mont. (WLS) -- Danny Pilipow, 56, of Portage, Ind., died from injuries he sustained falling down Mount Jackson in Glacier National Park, park officials said.

Pilipow's sister said he was hiking with his son Christopher when his son slipped and fell. When Pilipow tried to help him, his sister said, he fell the other direction. Park officials said Christopher was able to stop himself on the snowbank and, unable to find Pilipow, hiked back to Gunsight Campground to report the fall. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.

Park Rangers located Pilipow's body the following day and recovered in on Sept. 1. He died from the injuries sustained in his fall, according to the Glacier County Sheriff's Office.

Pilipow's sister said her brother loved hiking and went to Glacier National Park several times a year. She said both he and his son were experienced hikers.

Park officials offered their condolences to Pilipow's friends and family. They said falls are one of the leading causes of death in the park.
