Man shot, killed by police in Round Lake; officer injured

ROUND LAKE, Ill. (WLS) -- A man was shot and killed by police Friday night in north suburban Round Lake, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force said.

An officer also sustained non-life threatening injuries in the incident, which occurred just before 11 p.m. in the 0-100 block of North Magillis Drive.

Police said they received three 911 calls about a suspicious man banging on doors and trying to break into homes.

The officer arrived on scene and located the offender, who police said came after the officer with a piece of glass.

"When the officer made contact, a struggle then ensued between the officer and the offender. The officer did discharge their firearm and the offender was struck," said Detective Chris Covelli, of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The offender, identified as Michael Musson, 22, of Round Lake, later died of his injuries.

Police said Musson lived on the block where the incident occurred and that they had encountered him before. He previously lived in Grayslake, police said.

A neighbor said he heard the gunshots and woke up and saw extensive damage.

"One of the things the task force will do is interview officers who arrived at the scene, interview who discharged their firearm and work to determine exactly what happened but as of right now, we don't have the exact timeline of events," Covelli said.

The injured female officer was hospitalized and released Saturday morning, Round Lake Police Chief Michael Gillette said. She was placed on paid administrative leave. She has been with the department for 12 years.

No knife or gun was recovered on the scene.
