Giving back to end hunger
Food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens work tirelessly to end hunger; but there are ways you can help.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens work tirelessly to end hunger; but there are ways you can help. For starters, consider donating money to food providers, who can often buy in bulk for much less than what you can buy at a grocery store. Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas see an outpouring of support, but food banks are in need year-round, so consider volunteering on other days.

You can always step out of the soup kitchen, and into the garden as well. Volunteering your time or making donations to local community gardens, co-ops, farmers markets, and other organizations can help foster community and feed the hungry.

The non-profit WhyHunger (http://whyhunger.org/) connects people to nutritious, affordable food through community organizations. This holiday season, they are teaming up with Chamilia to offer a sterling silver charm. The timing for the launch of this new item coordinates with WhyHunger's annual Hungerthon campaign- Nov. 1 - Dec. 31. The Hungerthon raises funds to invest in long - term solutions that help people access nutritious food through strategic promotional efforts each year. Alison Meares Cohen, Senior Director of Programs at WhyHunger, sat down with ABC 7 Eyewitness News to talk about ways you can end hunger in your neighborhood.
