City completes playground renovation program ahead of schedule

The city of Chicago has announced that it has made good on a promise to put playgrounds within walking distance of every kid across the city's neighborhoods.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel launched the "Chicago Plays" initiative back in 2013. Since then, more than 300 playgrounds and parks have been built around Chicago.

"We have strengthened the fabric of communities through one of the most aggressive playground rehabilitation programs in the country, bringing more recreational opportunities and play areas to children in every neighborhood," Emanuel said.

The mayor's office said the program finished one year ahead of schedule. An average of $135,000 was spent in the construction of new playgrounds at each location for a total cost of about $44 million, the mayor's office said.
