Man, 70, shot in Humboldt Park after using ATM

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 70-year-old man was shot on Chicago's northwest side on Wednesday after using an ATM.

According to police, the shooting happened around 12:35 p.m. in a parking lot in the 3300-block of West North Avenue in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood, just a few steps away from the ATM.

"I'm in shock that this even happened right here in broad daylight," said Raymond Souchet, a resident of Humboldt Park.

Officials said the man was shot in his right side and was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable but guarded condition.

Police said the offender was described as a black balding male. Officials said there was a struggle between the victim and the offender in the parking lot when the offender shot the man then fled in a white sedan.

Chicago police issued a warning of a recent rash of armed robberies in the area, all crimes occurring a short drive from the location of Tuesdays shooting. Most of the victims had just drawn money from an ATM.

"It's scary because nowadays you can't even go to a bank and take out your own money because you're worried someone might attack you," said Judy DeJesus, a Humboldt Park resident.

"It's dangerous out here," said Krystal Barksdale, a customer of the bank nearby. "Everybody needs to be careful."

Police said they have no one in custody, but are reviewing surveillance video from the bank and other nearby businesses.
