Hammond police officer charged with operating while intoxicated

HAMMOND, Ind. (WLS) -- A Hammond police officer has been charged with operating while intoxicated after being observed driving erratically on I-65 in Indiana, Indiana State Police said.

An Indiana state trooper was conducting a traffic stop on I-65 north of the Lowell/Hebron exit when the trooper observed a Honda Civic abruptly veer over to the exit ramp to S.R. 2, police said. The trooper ended the traffic stop to investigate the Honda Civic, which was seen weaving while driving on the shoulder of S.R. 2, police said.

After pulling over the car, the trooper smelled alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver, 30-year-old Mathew Anderson, identified himself as a Hammond police officer and told the trooper he had weapons in the vehicle.

Anderson refused a field sobriety test and a certified breath test at the Lake County Jail, police said. He was charged with operating while intoxicated (refusal), operating while intoxicated (endangering) and unsafe lane movement and given $1,000 bond.
