Authorities: 1 dead, at least 1 injured in East Garfield Park crash

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Charges are pending for the driver of a car that T-boned another early Thursday morning, killing a person inside that second car.

A man was killed and the driver police believe caused the crash was suffered minor injuries in the crash in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, authorities said.

A Kia and a Volkswagen collided shortly after 2 a.m. in the 3600 block of West Lake. The crash caused both vehicles to hit a concrete support pillar under the CTA Green Line tracks.

A man who was in the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at Norwegian American Hospital, police and fire officials said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office did not immediately provide details on the death.

Firefighters and emergency responders worked tirelessly, using the Jaws of Life to free the person inside the smashed Volkswagen, pinned against a concrete pillar under the Conservatory Green Line stop.

The female driver of the 2013 Kia sedan, whose age was not known, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, according to police. She is now in police custody. Police have not said what the charges could be.

Family members say her face and eye were hurt when the airbag deployed.

The CPD Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating the crash, police said. Further details were not immediately available.

Lake Street was closed for about five hours after the crash.
