NAPERVILLE (WLS) --Police are investigating a carjacking that happened in west suburban Naperville Friday morning.
"It's hard to believe, especially in Naperville. You would never expect that to happen around that area," said Israel Villegas.
Villegas, 40, of Mundelein was stopped at the BP gas station in the 1900-block of Brookdale Road around 4:58 a.m. when a passenger in a Dodge Durango jumped out of the vehicle and demanded the man's silver Lexus at gunpoint. The Lexus' license plate is ES300H.
"He said something that I didn't pick up because I was freaked out with the gun. I also saw the fear in him because he was shaking too much with the gun, and that's the part that freaked me out a little bit more," he said.
The suspect then fled the scene with the car, which was last seen traveling north on Route 59, police said. The suspect is described as about 20 years old, 5'10", 200 pounds and dressed in all black.
Villegas was not injured.
Investigators said targeting luxury vehicles seems to be the latest trend. This is Naperville's second carjacking in the past two months.
"That's what's the trend that's been going on, is luxury vehicles being targeted. Some of them have been reported to be used in crimes, other crimes," said Cmdr. Louis Cammiso, Naperville Police Department.
"It's happening everywhere, crime happening in inner city, you never know what to expect these days, you've got to be careful," said Kenyona Hamilton.
"I guess things happen everywhere. Just keep your eyes wide open," Villegas said.
Villegas said there was an accomplice in another vehicle, a black Dodge Durango. Authorities are now studying surveillance video from that gas station.
