SCHERERVILLE, Ind. (WLS) -- A northwest Indiana man was about to withdraw cash from an ATM when a thief approached him from behind.
The terrifying moments were caught on camera.
A similar incident happened to a woman that same day.
The male victim, 53, was using the ATM at First Financial Bank, punching in numbers, when the suspect - wearing a hooded jacket and a bandana covering much of his face - approached with a gun drawn. He told the victim to withdraw the maximum amount - $300.
Eventually, the robber checked the victim's bank account, withdrew $60, and took off in what appeared to be a blue Hyundai Santa Fe. Police say his weapon was equipped with a laser, though he fired no shots. Police believe the same suspect tried to steal money from a woman at a Chase Bank ATM across the street minutes earlier. She managed to get away.
Police say the suspect never showed the gun to the woman, but he made a comment about needing to buy drugs. Police believe the same suspect is responsible for both crimes.
