CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two people were stabbed on the CTA Brown Line in Lincoln Square Thursday afternoon.

Chicago police said the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on the southbound Brown Line near the Western station in the 4600-block of N. Western. It's not clear whether the stabbings took place on the train itself or the platform, but the Lincoln Square Farmers Market was disrupted when the melee spilled out onto the ground.

"There was a man and woman on the ground. The man looked a lot worse than the woman, with stab wounds in his rib area and on his arm," said Bonnie Dotson, who provided first aid to the victims.

Police said the two victims - an 18-year-old woman and a 20-year old man - got into an argument with two other males and a female whom they knew. Two of the men stabbed the woman in her left arm, police said, and the man with her received multiple stab wounds.

"He seemed like he was having a hard time getting any air," Dotson said.

The man was taken in critical condition to Advocate llinois Masonic Medical Center. The woman was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital, where her condition stabilized.

"It's a family-oriented neighborhood. We have little children and stuff and they don't need that here," said Benjamin Vinkemulder, a resident.

Police said the male stabbing victim is a documented gang member.

No one is in custody.
