CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) -- Two men were shot by federal agents Monday during an illegal firearms investigation in suburban Chicago Heights, a U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms official said.

ATF spokesperson Tom Ahern said two suspects were taken to an area hospital and a third suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

ATF agents and Chicago police were working together on the operation. No officers were injured.

"We're trying to protect the communities from individuals who are using firearms to further whatever illegal activities they're involved in," Ahern said.

"I just seen the police officer fire the last shot, which was the third shot, and the boy just fell like, face down on the ground," witness Darnesha Bankston said.

Both men were shot in the legs and are expected to be OK. The third suspect will appear in federal court Tuesday morning, Ahern said.
