CHICAGO (WLS) -- Summer is more than a month away, but Tuesday felt like summer in Chicago.

The city's beaches were packed as the temperature reached nearly 90 degrees - about 15 degrees above normal.

Tuesday was the hottest day of the year, and the warmest since September. Not quite the hottest May 16, which occurred in 1962 when mercury reached 94 degrees.

"Today was pretty cool. Everybody is out at the beach feeling good. Nice weather, so I'm pretty happy," said Dakota Ross, who was also at the beach.

The warm temps is a stark contrast to the first part of May, which was mostly colder than normal.

"It went from extremely cold to extremely hot, but I love it," said Destinee Mustari.

"I was wearing a coat at the beginning of May so I really appreciate this weather," said Sarafina Bassett, who was also at the beach on Tuesday.

The warm weather won't last. Colder temperatures expected later this week.
