2 shot on I-57 on Far South Side

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two people were wounded and two others injured after a shooting and crash on I-57 on the Far South Side Monday morning, Illinois State Police said.

The shooting took place in the inbound lanes of I-57 at 115th Street at about 2:45 a.m., police said. Two people inside a beige Hyundai were wounded and transported to Christ Hospital where they are in stable condition. Two other people were hospitalized as a precaution, fire officials said.

The driver of the vehicle told police that the shots came from a black Dodge Charger, which was last seen heading north on I-57.

A truck driver said he heard the shots on the interstate and then saw the car lose control and crash. Kewan Watts, who is part of a bike club, said he heard at least six gunshots.

"Two of the individuals seemed like they had gunshot wounds because of how they were grabbing their bodies. One had looked like he had maybe two shots the other one looked like he took about three and they ended up collapsing. The other people that were in the car with them ended up tending to them," witness Kewan Watts said.

Watts is shaking his head over a senseless crime.

"We were just speaking about the violence and how it's not even summer yet and how crazy it us. Actually a fellow motorcyclist was shot last week," Watts said.

Illinois State Police shut down inbound lanes of I-57 from 119th to 111th streets to investigate the crash and reopened shortly before 7 a.m.

No one is in custody. Police are investigating.

A total of 26 people have been wounded in shootings in Chicago Memorial Day weekend, with one person fatally shot. To keep the numbers down Chicago police have put an extra 1,300 officers on the street, more than 400 more than last year.

"I mean I understand it's Memorial Day weekend but summer hasn't even gotten here in full effect....it's really kind of scary," Watts said.
