CHICAGO (WLS) -- It can be difficult to get kids to eat their fruits and vegetables but a new program at several Chicago schools is working to change that.

Learning gardens were started about six weeks ago and, on Thursday, it was harvest time.

At Laura Ward Elementary in East Garfield Park, students learn what it takes to grow a garden.

They grew radishes, lettuces and even pea shoots. All the ingredients for a healthy salad were there.

"They've really been taking care of these plants from beginning to end by themselves which is really exciting," said third grade teacher Lauren Walsh.

"My favorite part is harvesting," said student Erania McFadden.

"My favorite part of all this is planting the seeds," said student Starr Brantley.

The seeds that could grow into healthier eating habits.

"This is the first generation of youth that has a shorter life expectancy than their parents, so one of the major goals of this project is to reintroduce real fruits and vegetables to students and our youth so they can make more informed decisions in the future," said garden educator Whitney Richardson.
