A toddler was found wandering around the night of June 11, 2017 at Rainbow Beach on Chicago's South Side.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 2-year-old boy was found alone Sunday evening at Rainbow Beach on the South Side, police said.

On Tuesday, Shadonna J. McFadden, 28, Carpentersville, was charged with one misdemeanor count of child endangerment. Police did not say how the woman and boy are related. McFadden is scheduled to appear in court June 27.

Just before 10 p.m. Sunday, the toddler was spotted on the beach, located near East 75th Street. He was shirtless and walking on the sand.

At about 11:30 a.m. Monday, Chicago police announced that his family had been located.

Detectives are still investigating the circumstances surrounding how the child ended up alone.

The boy was placed in foster care, however it was immediately unclear whether he would stay in protective custody now that his family came forward.

On Monday, people walking along the beach were confused by the incident.

"Whoever did that, I don't know how it's possible, but they need to check in with themselves," said Mike Myers, who had taken off Monday to come to the beach with his 1-year-old son Mosiah.

"You can't forget your kid. I don't know what happened," said Milton Smith.

"What is a baby that young, a toddler, doing out at 10:30 at night?" said Joy Smith.

Elijah Kimble has the same question. He's the father of a young son, and says if his child ever went missing, he would realize it right away and go to police

"That's not good. They should be looking for him by now if they haven't seen him since last night," he said.
